Valentines Day

The day of love. To me valentines day pretty much seems the same as every other day. Im surrounded by the people I love and even though they might drive me crazy sometimes, I know they feel the same. Of course I have always said Valentines day was a holiday created by the greeting card company. I figured this wasnt totally true, especially when I picked up a little book for Willow on Valentines day. So wanting to know more I did some research online and so everyone knows here is Valentines Day.
The holiday is named after a christian martyr named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496. Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. The Catholic Encyclopedia also speaks of a third saint named Valentine who was mentioned in early martyrologies under date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with a number of companions, but nothing more is known about him.The holiday became associated with love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The sending of Valentines was a fashion in nineteenth-century Great Britain, and, in 1847, Esther Howland developed a successful business in her Worcester, Massachusetts home with hand-made Valentine cards based on British models. The popularity of Valentine cards in 19th century America, where many Valentine cards are now general greeting cards rather than declarations of love, was a harbinger of the future commercialization of holidays in the United States. It's considered one of the Hallmark holidays.

There of course is more, to much to put on a blog, but enough is here to give you the idea of the history of Valentines day. So we celebrate this day, the best to our abilities. Some love it and some hate it. It never really turns out as planned for us, but like I said anyday can feel like valentines day. The showing of love to your significant other, friends, family, children is like celebrating valentines day. I hope everyone has a good valentines day every day.
